Franklin County Pennsylvania just 25 miles to the east of Mercersburg. Closer to us is the
Tuscarora Trail, which can be found just 12 miles to the west. Less rigorous hiking may be
found along the C&O Canal, along the Potomac River in Washington County Maryland.

scenery and easy walking.
The Mercersburg Academy - The Mercersburg Academy is one of the premier boarding
schools in the country. The beautiful grounds are home to the original cabin in which
James Buchanan was born. Many parents, family and friends of students stay at the
Steiger House while visiting the Academy.
American History sites - Mercersburg and the surrounding area was sparsely settled prior to the Revolutionary
war. Efforts to preserve that history have been successful to some degree. The history room at the Fendrick Library
holds artifacts and documents from this early period, which may be viewed by the public. It is best to call ahead and
schedule a time for your visit at 717-328-9233. Another point of interest is the restored site of the original Fort
Loudoun. Fort Loudoun is an authentic French and Indian frontier era fort.
Civil War Heritage sites - For the Civil War enthusiast, the area abounds in sites of interest, starting with the town
of Mercersburg itself which was raided by Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart during his famous ride around the
Northern army. Ten citizens were taken hostage during the raid. The man who would later become the owner of the
Steiger House, George Steiger, was included in this group, but escaped and returned to town. And of course, the
15th President of the United States of America, James Buchanan, was a son of Mercersburg. Buchanan was the
President that preceded Abraham Lincoln. Also, Mercersburg is located within 45 minutes of both the Antietam
Battlefield and the Gettysburg Battlefield.
Golf - Many quality golf courses are available to guests within a short driving radius. The closest is Whitetail Golf
Resort near Mercersburg. Next is Greencastle Greens in nearby Greencastle, Pennsylvania. Near Chambersburg
Pennsylvania you can enjoy Penn National Golf Club. And nearby Hagerstown Maryland is the home Black Rock
Golf Course.

viewing of upcoming sales. The Gateway Auction is near Chambersburg, and Hurley's Auctions is located between
Greencastle and Waynesboro.
